Digital Art

Hey hey kids!

It’s time for my Photoshop skills!

First and foremost, I must mention that I’ve only learnt how to make actual digital art almost a year ago. Before then, I knew the basics that would help with my photography, such as crop, trim, resize, skew, that sort of thing. I found Photoshop to be an intimidating program at first truthfully. There’s just so many options and buttons and nothing is named the way I needed it to be named.

With practise though, I’ve learnt a ton of new tricks and I’m looking forward to learning even more.

First off, a digital art piece based on my eye.

I wish I could remember where I got that particular flower pattern from. I’ve been really hesitant about putting this piece online but if anyone can tell me who made this pattern, I’d be more than happy to credit them!

Banksy Exhibition

As a birthday present to myself, my two best friends took me to Bristol last Friday. We were only there for 2 days and a night so we wanted to get in as much as we could.

After we devoured the most delicious breakfast, we made our way to the Bristol City Musuem, to wait in line for 2 and a half hours to see the Banksy Exhibition. (If you don’t know who Banksy is, well then, I gotta ask, where have you been hiding? Use your Google powers to see who I mean.)

It was totally worth the wait, I’m really glad that we got through that crowd!

This was only PART of the queue. This shows nothing of the crowd behind me, nor the crowd around the corner in front of me!

The queues have been like that for a month. People begin queuing at 7AM but the doors don’t open until 9AM. However, admission is free and I do recommend visiting it yourself if you can.

Kings Of Concrete 2009

Yes! It’s that time of the year again, when I get to be an official photographer for the Kings of Concrete festival, woohoo!

The Kings of Concrete is a 2 day festival held in the ground of the Dublin Civic Offices in Wood Quay, Dublin. It’s a brilliant festival that features and focuses on mostly ignored activites, like skateboarding, parkour, B-boy dancing, MC-ing (not sure what the verb to MC is), graffiti/street art, rollerblading, BMXing…and that’s all I can think of right now but there’s also workshops so anyone can learn these same skills. You can learn how to print your own tshirts, how to breakdance, do caperoia (prob spelt wrong, I’m tired right now), how to MC and lots more.

It’s also a chance to be able to approach graffiti artists, which isn’t something I can normally do. I managed to overcome my aweness/shyness and talk to a few of them about their work and just in general talk to them.

Graffiti-Street Art photography

Like many people, I used to think that graffiti was mindless vandalism, with stupid sayings like “Deco wuz ‘ere” “Tallaght represnt!!!!” and general lack of spelling and unappealing eye sores.

A few years back though, I was brought around to the idea that graffiti can be actual street art and I began exploring the streets of Dublin on a regular basis looking and hunting for good graffiti. There’s so much of it but amazingly not a lot of people seem to see it. (Then again, most people wouldn’t be entering dark lanes and streets with the same interest I do!)

Sadly, there’s no graffiti code of ethics in Ireland and often great graffiti is tagged by some idiot who thinks his (or her) turf is being trodden on by some intruder. (For those who aren’t sure what tagging is, it’s basically scrawling your tag name over someone else’s work to claim your terrority.)

I’ve visited Amsterdam 3 times so far and every time I’m stunned by the graffiti and ethics that are there. Tagging is virtually unheard of because there’s LOADS of space to do your bit. The only things out of bounds are private property, shops, museums etc. but scaffolding boards is most definitely free game. I’m in heaven just wandering the streets with my camera, almost getting hit by gangs of bikes as I stare at everything. *happy sigh*

I’ve managed to help a lot of people to appreciate street art a lot more through my photos and you can see a lot of them on my Graffiti set on my Flickr page here. I always try to include what street I found the graffiti on and if possible, the artist. (I never show any of the artist’s face in any of my photos and real names are never published.)

Hmm, this is gonna to be tough to choose, I have so many favourites!
